This is a very recent addition to my ever expanding library of electronic music. Booka Shade are a german House duo that established themselves relatively recently, and are gaining traction in the music scene at an astounding rate.
Booka Shade’s particular musical style is somewhat minimalistic. Though house, I’d hardly call it the stuff you get up and dance real hard to, but more likely just have a bit of a mellowed out jamming session. The video below begs to differ however:
Booka Shade has a style which is easy to recognise, which is a positive and a negative. It’s positive in a way that as a rule, Booka Shade tracks are very well produced, and have a particular identifiable quality about them. Quick, pulsing, yet calming synths, quirky kicks and a vast array of odd - but great - sounding percussion, and some amazing melodies to match. However, this is also their downfall. Most Booka Shade tracks sound pretty similar. Yes, the individual sounds change, but overall, it has the same feel for every song, with slight variations in melody and percussion, but nothing dramatic that could separate each song from the rest. This could be perceived as a cleverly formulated move to firmly entrench themselves in the electrohouse scene with a defining style, which can then lead them into interesting experiments which could further push them in front of other artists. Speaking of other artists, Booka Shade also do a number of very nice sounding remixes of tracks, and have excellent remixes done of their tracks. The Tocadisco remix of Body Language is a work of artistry, audio poetry even.
Overall, Booka Shade are awesome, and their Latest album, Movements, is proof of this. A calming collection of awesome and varied - as much of a variety as Booka Shade tracks allow - songs that are present throughout the album. Nothing boring, all quality. Movements is a great collection of the work Booka Shade has done up to this point in time.
