Album Review: Daft Punk - Alive 2007
Album: Daft Punk - Alive 2007
Label: Virgin Music
Genre: Electronic, House
Released: 2007 - November
Moe Rating:
Let’s start off with saying that Daft Punk used to be cool. They are not cool anymore. They used to be original, and their music was somewhat decent. It is neither anymore.
Recently, Daft Punk has begun to shit me. The mainstreamity of their music, combined with the fact they’ve cracked the magic formula for selling music, means that they don’t have to use any creativity to release an album that’s likely to sell millions of copies. This annoys me.
The majority of the people that like Daft Punk only know about 10 songs, if that, those being their popular tracks, Harder Better Faster Stronger, One More Time, etc.
Those songs are popular for a reason. If you’ve listened to other Daft Punk songs, you’ll find that they - for lack of a better phrase - suck ass. Rollin’ and Scratchin’ for example, is not a pleasant listening experience. Screamo metal sounds better than that. Yes, I went there. I’d say you’d be sick of at least 2/3 of Daft Punk songs within the first minute if someone forced you to listen to their discography, because every single song just uses repetitive and highly annoying samples that continue throughout the duration of the entire song. Listen to the song Superheroes from the album, Discovery if you don’t believe me.
I’m not exactly sure why it was called Alive 2007 anyway. Every song from Human After All is on there, even Steam Machine, which is probably the worst track on there! It’s a pretty widely known fact that Human After All was regarded as Daft Punk’s worst album ever, probably because they only had about 2 months to complete the thing. - Personally, I love Human After All, but others beg to differ - So by the looks of things, they’ve just mashed up Human After All songs with their popular songs in some feeble hope to woe back the critics and fans. Is the only reason they called it the Alive 2007 tour because it took place 10 years after the 1997 album? If so, that’s a dumb reason.
This album, Alive 2007, is simply just a re-hash of all the popular songs they’ve made, mashed up. There is little, if any, new content in the album, and it’s still going to sell like nothing else. I realise that the name probably indicates some symbolic meaning, representing 10 years since the release of the original ‘Alive’ recording, but hey, at least there was something new in there. Alive 2007 simply sounds like someone has done a crappy trance mix of all their songs at home and then recorded it on their mobile phone.
The sound quality of the album is atrocious, and before you start trying to rape me, yes, I am fully aware it’s a live recording. I have a D-Block and S-Te-Fan live set here, it’s about a minute or two short of 2 hours, and it’s less than 100MB, and the sound quality is great. Alive 2007 is roughly 90MB, and goes for just over an hour, and still sounds terrible. How hard could it have been to record it straight from the mixer? Sure, people might still want the live version in hopes that if they listen to some douchebag in the crowd continuously screaming, that someday they might be able to re-live those glorious moments at that over-hyped, overpriced concerts, but if I’m paying good money, I want good quality crappy trance remixes.
Daft Punk are skilled, they have some nice tracks, there’s no doubt, but they’re overplayed and over-appretiated, but Alive 2007 sucks. This should be at the top of the list of Albumthatsuck.com.

your a fool. you’re implying that it’s like new material that isn’t original, and critiscizing them for simply remixing it.
IT’S A LIVE ALBUM.
Sound quality isn’t justified either, it’s never gonna match studio unless it’s a Van Morrison show in a small room with perfect acoustics. I really wish I could give Alive a good review on my site but alas….my url hinders me.
Let me start off my post by asking this: what self-respecting critic starts off a review by calling the artist “cool?” Do you have the vocabulary of a 12 year-old? Sadly, the review is all downhill from that nearly insurmountable amount of failure.
One thing is that your review lacks credibility. For someone who seems to dislike their samples, you fail to mention that many of their samples are from some popular and some underground artists. You would think that something of such importance would warrant a mention, which shows me you did little research into this artist.
The idea that they are mainstream now because people know “only ten of their songs” is idiotic. It’s not like they completely turned around their style to sound more appealing to the public (ahem, Modest Mouse). They have been consistent with their genre and experimented with it, and just because they have begun to gain more public praise does not mean anything more than word has been passed around about them.
Congratulations on ending the new year on such a high note of douchebaggery. I noticed that as soon as you finished this poor excuse for a blog, you put it on Daft Punk’s last.fm page to attract the attention of fans. Anything for attention, even if it’s negative, right?
Poor writers like you come and go and you all fit the exact same mold, nothing new and nothing of importance. The fact that I have taken the time to completely berate you should be viewed as a compliment, since most who view such worthless reviews as this quickly close the page.
Nate your my fucking hero.
Howdy Nate!
Let me start off my reply by asking this: what self-respecting commenter starts off a comment by calling the blogger incompetent, without first realising the intention of the blog? There is not a team of reviewers, there are no critics, it’s just me and my point of view on my little personal website. I’ve never said I was credible, quite the opposite in fact. It’s all there in the tagline. Sadly, your comment is unoriginal and follows the standard fan-boy response.
I am fully aware that Daft Punk sample other artists (both popular and underground, whatever difference that makes), but the fact they do so is irrelevant. Daft Punk are still the ones looping them for 5 minutes.
Daft Punk are the epitome of mainstream electronica. The only other musical entity that comes close is that song by Darude that everybody knows - when they hear it anyway -, Sandstorm. As for consistency with the genre, sure, if the genre their aiming for is ‘annoying repetitive electronica’. Every single song suffers from that same agonising problem. I’m going to quote my friend from Albumthatsuck.com talking about Human After All: “You sit on the computer banging your head in enjoyment…for about a minute.â€. This isn’t true just about HAA, but the majority of Daft Punk songs. Even the remixes are bad, because I guess there’s only so much you can do with a 4 second sample and a bit of percussion.
They may not have completely turned around their style, and I’ll admit, they have been quite experimental, but it doesn’t mean they haven’t modified it. Until the next Daft Punk album comes out, I can’t really be sure whether they’re following through with their terrible popularity-orientated scheme, or using their creativity and potential to get on the leading edge of experimental electronic music production again. Aphex Twin is a perfect example. Not so much concerned with popularity and money, but helping to forward electronica through producing different music, and the Warp Records, responsible for signing similar artists that too wish to advance their particular genre.
I’m glad to have had an influence in your life this year Nate, and you’re damn right! Anything for attention.
Great writers like me come and stay and we do all fit the same mold, voicing our opinions, even (especially) if it goes against the grain. Blogging primarily about hardstyle is unique, original and new. The fact that you have taken the time to berate me is indeed a compliment. I aim to get some sort of reaction from those who read my blog and we can clearly see that it’s worked. Any input is good input, plus, I live for conflict.
Once again, thanks for your comment Nate
“Great writers like me”
That’s rich. Fix your spelling and grammar, stop making up words, and you’ll be partway there. Have opinions that are actually worth something to someone other than yourself and you’ll be even closer. Be able to write about your opinions with more clarity than just spewing generalizations and you’ll be tantalizingly close. But great? That’s not your call. I realize this is a personal blog and almost by definition is a vanity project, but calling yourself a great writer over stuff like this is like saying you’re great in bed based on your ability to whack yourself off.
I see you have a similar ability to overestimate your impact on other people’s lives. I have no such delusion about my impact on you - commenting on a blog is like pissing in a bucket of piss. As for you, have fun posting your witty response and entertaining overblown ideas about your importance.
Wow Moe! This article’s really made an impact on my life. I used to underestimate it to a bucket of piss. I’m really having fun reading your witty responses too! Keep them coming with your entertaining overblown ideas it’s a really good read mate!
I couldn’t understand some parts of this article eview: Daft Punk - Alive 2007 at The Music Re-View, but I guess I just need to check some more resources regarding this, because it sounds interesting.
Hey man, all this hostility is not needed to this album. Sure, you may not like Daft Punk all too much anymore, but the fact that it’s bad becuase it’s a live album does not make sense to me.
Think about all the sets you listen to (I’m assuming a true hardstyle fan would be checkin’ out some bangin sets at all the Q events and what not); Would you rather listen to a set from, let’s say, The Prophet, recorded in the studio with great quality, or would you rather listen to a set that you know thousands of fellow clubbers tripped to, cried to, or even just got an extremely euphoric feeling and their entire body ridden with goosebumps as he hits that filter on a huge ass break down.. You hear the kick, and you hear the screams.
You can’t better than that man!
However, I can agree that if it’s a shitty recording that’s pretty lame. Shit can be recorded in studio quality from a mixer if you have the right equipment. I just wanted to bitch for a moment - Thanks! Love the site!
Leave your response!
